Last updated August 18, 2023
When someone you care about dies, it can be very overwhelming. You can use this checklist to keep track of the things you might need to do. Everyone’s situation is unique, so there may be more or fewer items on your list.
- Look for a will. Their executor (if they have one) is responsible for settling the estate.
- You may want to seek legal advice.
- Did the person own property with or without someone else?
- Will probate be necessary?
- Do you need to update your own will?
- If appropriate, have the person’s mail forwarded.
- Get certified death certificates from the funeral home for proof-of-death.
- They will charge you for each certificate. Some creditors will want a certified copy while others will take or make a photocopy and give you the back the original.
- Notify all insurance companies where the person holds a policy and collect life insurance.
- You/the spouse should update your own insurance beneficiaries, etc.
- Contact financial advisor/institutions where the person has an account.
- Cancel or change the name on joint accounts and credit cards and order new checks.
- Contact pension funds.
- Are there any tax implications?
- Update property titles.
- Cancel driver’s license.
- Sell vehicle(s) or change vehicle(s) title.
- The legal representative/spouse can typically sign a title with proof-of-death.
- Review any accounts that have the deceased person’s name listed on the account.
- Notify Social Security (SSA), who will then notify Medicare.
- Apply for Social Security death benefit https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ssa-8.html.
- The funeral home will provide SSA with the certified copy of the death certificate.
- See if you/the spouse are eligible for spousal benefits.
- Delete social media/email accounts.
- Schedule an appointment with your own healthcare provider and update your health screenings.
