Why workers are hard to find:

  • Minnesotans in every region of the state are struggling to recruit and retain direct support professionals.
  • There is a worker shortage across America. In Minnesota, there are 43 available workers for every 100 open jobs.
  • The State of Minnesota has multiagency workgroup focused on developing recommendations for expanding, diversifying, and improving Minnesota's direct and support workforce.

 Possible workarounds and alternatives:

  • Life-sharing is a relationship-based living arrangement that matches you with an individual or a family who will share their home and life with you. The individual or family will provide a portion of your care so that you do not always have to rely on shift staff. The life-sharing process involved carefully matching people based on shared interests and lifestyles.
  • The use of assistive technology (see: Assistive technology/devices Quick Reference) and remote support can increase your independence at home, at work, and in the community. For more information regarding available technology and funding you can also visit Minnesota's guide to Assistive Technology or the Minnesota STAR program
  • Local city and county and Tribal resources, such as community transportation programs, home maintenance services and delivery services, might also be helpful.
  • Local Chamber of Commerce sites are a good resource for service provders.
  • Encouraging clients to consider hiring family, neighbors, friends, faith community friends through FSE Consumer Directions.
