 When to use:

Caller has expressed concern about falls.

 Keep your path clear:

  • Move clutter and cords out of the way.
  • Rearrange furniture to allow for lots of room.
  • Ger rid of your throw and scatter rugs.
  • Apply double-sided tape to the back of carpet to keep it from moving.
  • Be sure to have ice, snow and leaves cleared from walkways.
  • In winter, use de-icer, salt or sand on sidewalks and driveways.
  • Also in winter, walk like a penguin by bending your knees slightly, pointing your feet out sightly like a penguin and walking flat-footed. Keep your center of gravity over your feet as much as possible.
  • Pay attention to floor transitions. Different flooring, for example, carpet vs. hard surface floors, may have different heights.

 Don't Rush:

  • Take your time when getting up to answer the phone or the door.
  • When going up or down stairs, always use the handrail.
  • Focus on where you are going. If your mind is busy with thoughts, you may not be paying attention to trip hazards.

 Brighten up the place:

  • Keep lights on in highly traveled areas throughout the house.
  • Use nightlights to brighten bedrooms, halls and bathrooms.
  • Have a lamp or flashlight and glasses within easy reach of your bed.

 Keep the bathroom fall-free:

  • Use a non-slip mat in the tub or shower.
  • Use a bath bench or shower stool.
  • Install a grab bar next to the toilet and in the bathtub or shower.

 Safety in the home:

  • Wear shoes that are non-skid and easy to walk in.
  • Don't get distracted while cooking, so you avoid fires, burns, scalding, etc.
  • Be extra careful when reaching for objects that are up high or when moving heavy objects.
  • If your bed or chair is too tall or too low, it can be challenging to stand up and that can lead to a fall.
    • When sitting on a bed or chair, your legs should be bent at a 90-degree angle.
  • Avoid getting out of bed too quickly.

 Wear appropriate clothing:

  • Socks and shoes that don't have proper support and shape can cause a fall. Be sure to wear shoes that enclose your foot--no slip-ons--and have a role.
  • Avoid pants or skirts that are too long so you do not trip on them.

 Heavy objects:

  • Avoid lifting things that are too heavy as they can throw off your balance. Ask for help with heavy items.
