 When to use: 

Caller is interested in applying for Medicare. 

NOTE: SHIP does not permit Senior LinkAge Line staff to enroll a caller into Social Security or Medicare. The caller must enroll themselves online or in-person into Social Security or Medicare. 

Before a person signs up for Medicare, it's helpful to know the answer to these questions:

  • Is this person at least 65 years old or about to turn 65? 
  • Does the person have health coverage right now? (Employer? Group coverage? Native American? Veteran? Some type of alternative creditable coverage to avoid Part B and/or Part D penalty?)
  • Are they already receiving any type of benefit payments such as SSDI (the only way to get automatically enrolled into Medicare is if you're already in that system).
