When to use:

Caller is interested in applying for Medicare.

NOTE: SHIP does not permit Senior LinkAge Line staff to enroll a caller into Social Security or Medicare. The caller must enroll themselves online or in-person into Social Security or Medicare.

Before a person signs up for Medicare, it's helpful to know the answer to these questions:

Is this person at least 65 years old or about to turn 65?
Does the person have health coverage right now? (Employer? Group coverage? Native American? Veteran? Some type of alternative creditable coverage to avoid Part B and/or Part D penalty?)
Are they already receiving any type of benefit payments such as SSDI (the only way to get automatically enrolled into Medicare is if you're already in that system).
